Where is Blacktown?

Blacktown is a suburb in “Greater Western Sydney” located 34 kilometres west of the heart of Sydney.. Balcktown is the largest of any suburb or town in New South Wales and is the location on the municipal centre of the Blacktown City Council region.

Blacktown, its beginnings

In 1791 Governor Arthur Phillip began granting land in the area to settlers and in 1819 Governor Lachlan Macquarie granted land to two indigenous men as payment for their services to the Crow, for showing the way over the Blue Mountains and for helping in dealing with the Aboriginal issues of the day. The railway arrived in 1860 and named the new station “Black Town Road Station which was shortened to “Blacktown” in 1862. The post office also opened in 1862 and a school in 1877. The Shire of Blacktown was formed in 1930.

Population then and now.

In 1933 the population was 13,000. During the 1950’s and 1960’s a large amount of suburban development both in the current suburb of Blacktown and surrounding areas occured. The National census in 2016 recorded the population of Blacktown itself to be 17,176 residents.
