Picton, its beginnings

First explored by Europeans in 1798 Picton was classed as being beyond the limits of settlement until 1821. In 1819 Governor Macquarie approved the building of a road to stretch between Sydney and the Southern Highlands. This road was known then as the “Great South Road“, now the Hume Highway. This, in turn opened up the Picton area to settlers.

Continued growth for Picton N.S.W.

The town of Picton realized major growth from 1863 when the railway arrived in town. Picton is the only town in the southern hemisphere that you can pass through twice when travelling by train. The town and surrounding area continued to grow until 2006 when the Hume Highway upgrades bypassed the town.

Population Census

The 2016 National census reported a population of 4,816 residence in Picton town. The population is made up mainly of Australian born residence and english is recorded as the main language spoken in homes.
