Located in the Northern Suburbs

Ryde is located some 13 kilometres north west of Sydney and 8 kilometres east of Parramatta, on the northern side of the “Parramatta River“. Surrounded by suburbs such as North Ryde, West Ryde and East Ryde, this suburb is the administrative centre of the City of Ryde Council precinct.

Ryde history

Named after a town on the Isle of Wight in the United Kingdom by the same name, Ryde was originally known by the first peoples as Wallumatta. The name “Ryde” was used from the 1840’s and adopted as the name of municipality in 1870. As Ryde is located at the top of the hill, it is often referred to as “Top Ryde” In 1892 the public school opened in Tucker Street. In the late 90’s the original Ryde Swimming Centre was demolished and replaced with the Ryde Aquatic Centre which played host to events for the 2000 Olympics.

Local Demographics

The local population has a median age of 36 years of which around 49% are Australian born. 71% of the housing in the area are private dwellings. The 2016 national census recorded a population for Ryde of some 26,499 people.
